Remember when you were in elementary school and everyone had to wear green on St. Patrick’s Day unless they wanted to be pinched? Did you ever wonder what this holiday was all about and why you were wearing green? The simple answer is that St. Patrick’s Day is a Catholic holy day of obligation that falls on the anniversary of the death of Ireland’s patron saint in the fifth century. In Ireland, Catholics traditionally attended church and enjoyed a feast afterwards. Since St. Patrick is believed to have used a three-leafed clover to represent the parts of the holy trinity, the shamrock and its bright green color became associated with the celebration. Today, the holiday is widely celebrated–with or without religious obligations.

One important St. Patrick’s Day tradition is the parade. Surprisingly, the original St. Patrick’s Day parade took place in New York City and not in Ireland. Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched through New York City on March 17, 1762. The noisy, music-filled parade was a chance for the soldiers to connect with their Irish roots and fellow Irishmen. Over time, Irish patriotism among American immigrants grew—and the traditional parade evolved to include bagpipes, drums, and dancing. By 1848, several New York Irish aid societies decided to unite to form one New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Today, that parade is the world ‘s oldest civilian parade and the largest in the United States. Each year, nearly three million people line the one-and-a-half mile parade route to watch the procession, which has 150,000 participants and lasts more than five hours from start to finish.

Miller Lite shamROCK 2012

Presented by Jameson Irish Whiskey and The Field

Saturday, March 17th, 2012 – 2:00 PM – Midnight

To benefit the Gaslamp Quarter Historical Foundation

It’s been 17 years since the birth of shamROCK and since lucky number 17 falls on a Saturday this year, shamROCK is destined to be the biggest Irish Celebration on the West Coast when over 20,000 Irish revelers hit the streets of the Gaslamp. The 17th Annual shamROCK 2012, presented by Jameson and The Field, will take place on the most sacred party day of the year, St. Patrick’s Day, Saturday, March 17th, 2012 from 2:00 p.m. until Midnight. We are pulling out all the stops for this year’s Celebration as we re-create a 150-foot Irish Pub on the streets of the Gaslamp; turn the streets green with over 80,000 square feet of green Astroturf; and with a lighting extravaganza, transform the Gaslamp Quarter into an urban, super chic version of the rolling hills of Ireland!

Everybody knows that shamROCK is the party of the year, and in 2012 it will live up to the “ROCK” in shamROCK with three stages of live entertainment. The Field Irish Stage will feature the Young Dubliners, Irish Rock, Irish Punk Rock and other Irish favorites. Fifth Avenue and F Street will feature the new Electronica stage with the most sexy, crazy sounds that will trance you into an Irish haze. The final stage will be located next to the 150-foot Irish pub and will play host to over 25 Irish River Dancers and your favorite San Diego and Los Angeles DJs. Dublin will have nothing on our pub, which will have lots of BEER and plenty of Jameson Irish Whisky to concoct any of your favorite St. Paddy’s Day libations.<br/.

shamROCK will once again take place on 6th Avenue between E and G Streets, “F” Street between 5th and 7th Avenues, and G Street between 5th and 6th Avenues in the Gaslamp Quarter. shamROCK will have three ticket prices with advance prices starting at $35, increasing to $40 and $45 at the door. Your wristband into shamROCK will also get you in-and-out privileges, as well as, no cover and food and drink specials at dozens of the Gaslamp Quarter’s hottest nightclubs and restaurants. Don’t test your luck, get your tickets now as shamROCK has sold out the last three years and with it leaping onto a Saturday all we can say is, “Erin go bragh!” All proceeds benefit the Gaslamp Quarter Historical Foundation. For additional information or to purchase tickets, please contact McFarlane Promotions at 619.233.5008 or visit www.sandiegoshamrock.com
